I LIKE TO OUTSMART MYSELF
Sometimes our intellect becomes a hindrance to our spiritual development. If heart and head aren’t aligned then Wisdoms work cannot be completed within us. I had an Anglican Priest by the name of Pam flat out tell me that my ministry- my helping others- would fail if I didn’t allow my heart to influence my mind.
Why? Simply put, while intellect can grasp spiritual ideas we must put forth the effort to allow Divine Wisdom into our hearts so we can experience the reverential awe that comes with it.
Rudolf Steiner believed when students would over intellectualize that they were actually refusing to allow spiritual growth to take place. He felt this aroused the interest of more nefarious beings that would then wrap illusions around the students mind, but I digress.
What’s important here is that we allow Divine Wisdom to be perfected within us. Personally, this meant I had to stop questioning the Divine order of the cosmos for long enough to notice the giant walls I’d built around my own heart. Then I had to surrender those broken parts of myself and turn them over to God no matter how badly I wanted to hold onto them.
- cease resistance to an enemy or opponent and submit to their authority.
- a believer completely gives up his own will and subjects his thoughts, ideas, and deeds to the will and teachings of a higher power.
To turn our will over sounds easy. It is easy to say. However, it’s quite difficult to put into action. See, I intellectualized the Spiritual Path for years before I actually submitted my will and my life to the God I claimed to believe in. The reality is so long as sharing spiritual principles comes from a place of wanting to be seen as spiritual it’s just another trapping of the Ego.
Our egos are smart. They live within our intellect and can easily convince us of why we don’t need to stop resisting something outside of ourselves. The problem with this line of thinking is spiritual transformation doesn’t happen on the level of intellect. It’s those broken parts of our hearts that need healed and that’s exactly where God goes. When we don’t give over our pain and misery we are telling God we don’t believe they can transform us. We aren’t trusting in the awesome power at the Heart of all things.
How can genuine spiritual transformation arise within a person that isn’t letting go?
Isn’t living our lives free from the bondage of our resentments no matter what’s happening the true gift of inner peace?
So why hold on to that piece of ourselves that’s bitter and angry? Why not give it all away and let go of it all?
Why not allow the spiritual transformation to take root and blossom within our lives?
That’s the true beauty of walking in the Way.
